Chanthaburi’s Journey Toward Becoming a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy
Chanthaburi, a province renowned for its abundant natural resources and world-famous fruits, is now stepping into a larger role on the global stage as it works toward becoming a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy. With strong potential in Gastronomy Tourism, the province aims to leverage its rich culinary heritage to create economic value and elevate local identity through sustainable tourism.
On January 11, 2025, the Chanthaburi Provincial Cultural Office hosted a knowledge-sharing meeting to advance its goal of becoming a creative citiy of gastronomy under the fiscal year 2025 initiative. Held at the Chanthaboon Riverside Community—a historic district in Mueang Chanthaburi District—the meeting served as a convergence point of local culture, food, and traditional ways of life.
Creating the Future of Chanthaburi’s Gastronomy
This collaborative session brought together key figures including Dr. Kosol Taeng-uthai, advisor to the Phuket Creative City Network in food science and technology; Mr. Ukrit Wongthongsalee, Chairman of the Chanthaburi Chamber of Commerce; and Asst. Prof. Thip Srisakunchairak, advisor to Chanthaburi’s creative cities of gastronomy initiative. Together, they shared ideas and strategies to transform Chanthaburi into an internationally recognized culinary destination.
In the afternoon, the province launched the “Jaem Chan Market” with an official opening ceremony. A declaration of cooperation between Phuket and Chanthaburi provinces was also signed to work together in advancing cities toward creative cities of gastronomy. The event was presided over by Mr. Monsit Paisarnthanawat, Governor of Chanthaburi, and attended by government officials and local residents at Chatrium Golf Resort Soi Dao, Pong Nam Ron District.

Local Ingredients, Global Plates: The Story Behind Every Bite
Chanthaburi’s local culinary landscape is defined by its diverse ingredients—seasonal fruits, native herbs, fresh seafood, and high-quality local products. These ingredients serve as the foundation for both traditional dishes and Functional Food innovations that combine taste with health benefits.
This initiative also created opportunities for local chefs and restaurant owners to design new menus that showcase locally sourced ingredients, providing unique culinary experiences for tourists seeking something more meaningful than just a meal.
Promoting Tourism Through Food Trails
As Gastronomy Tourism continues to grow in popularity, especially among younger travelers who crave authentic tastes paired with compelling stories, Chanthaburi is positioning itself as a key destination. The province’s culinary routes aim to connect organic farms, local eateries, cultural markets, and hands-on cooking activities—offering visitors a full-sensory experience of the region.
As part of this vision, participants visited Suthee Organic Farm in Khlung District to exchange knowledge about organic farming practices. The farm serves as a model for safe, farm-to-table ingredients, helping lay the groundwork for a sustainable tourism ecosystem.
“Suk Took Wan Tee Chanthaburi” – More Than a Slogan, It’s a Way of Life
The provincial slogan “Suk Took Wan Tee Chanthaburi” (translated: “Happiness Every Day in Chanthaburi”) is more than just a tourism tagline. It embodies the simplicity, warmth, and diversity of local life—expressed through food, culture, and nature. A visit to Chanthaburi offers not only scenic beauty and vibrant culture but also a journey through flavors that reflect the soul of the region.
Conclusion
Chanthaburi is steadily advancing on its path to becoming a true Creative City of Gastronomy, driven by collaboration across government, private sector, local communities, and culinary entrepreneurs. If you’re seeking a travel destination that nourishes your body, heart, and mind, Chanthaburi awaits—with stories told through every dish and flavors rooted deeply in its heritage.
